The other day I was on a business phone call with someone
I had never met before, her name was Michele.

We got talking a bit about what I did and I briefly told her one of my stories…

Many years ago, my partner and I responded to a SIDS call. After arriving we picked up the child and got the infant quickly to the hospital. I don’t remember a lot of details but I know it did affect me. I tried to put her out of my mind – it was too heartbreaking.

13 years later, a girl came to our fire station to thank my partner and I for her life – she was that SIDS infant!

Hearing her story, of how she was alive and well, deeply impacted me – I’ll never forget it.

In 2 minutes, there were tears in Michele’s voice. She has a little boy, and was deeply touched.

This is the impact of what First Responders do.

This is what stories do – they allow us to live at a greater depth than we may otherwise allow ourselves to feel.

And this changes people’s lives. Our stories have the sincere impact, to serve and help where others cannot for themselves. It is our dedicated duty. We talk about what we do and it is all good. It is the goodness that others, our family and friends want to hear. I see now, that my friends and family feel they are somehow part of the good of me and where the goodness exists in this country.

Not all stories have a happy ending. They are all powerful in their own right, and do not need to be suppressed – the good, the bad, or the ugly.

The thing is, a story loses its power of positive change when it goes untold.

Consider publishing yours now, while you’re still able, and the events are somewhat fresh in your mind.

By sharing your experiences and knowledge, you will be leaving you Legacy for family, friends, and fellow firefighters for generations to come.

I want to inspire and help. To carry on the recognition and the dedication to our lives.

What’s your story? I’d love to hear it!
